Printable Modular Paper Creature Templates for STEAM Craft Activities
Fantastic Creatures is a DIY modular paper craft system where creatures are built from a small family of 12 printable paper modules.
The entire system is based on 12 reusable templates. Some creatures use only two or three modules, others nine or ten, but the building pieces are always the same. What changes is how the modules are combined.
Once you understand the modules, you can start assembling them in many different ways and invent your own paper creatures.
The templates can be cut with simple scissors, which makes the set suitable for classroom activities, family craft time, or individual experimentation.
Fantastic Creatures is part of the Modular Builder system, where all sets share the same construction logic. Modules from different sets can be combined freely, expanding the range of forms you can build.
Because all creatures are built from the same small set of modules, the activity naturally introduces ideas like symmetry, repetition, and spatial reasoning. For this reason it also works well as a hands-on STEAM activity in classrooms.
STEP 1 โ MAKE THE MODULES
Start by printing the module templates.
Cut along the solid lines using scissors. Lightly score the fold lines before folding. Follow the folding guide and apply small dots of glue only where indicated.
STEP 2 โ ASSEMBLE THE CREATURES
The set includes 12 assembly guides.
Each creature is built by sliding the modules together so they lock into place. No glue is needed during this stage.
Once you understand how the modules connect, the process becomes quite intuitive.
STEP 3 โ BUILD MORE CREATURES
After building the 12 guided creatures, take a look at the More Creatures section.
These examples are shown as photos only, without instructions. They are meant as small challenges you can try to figure out on your own.
In the images, the modules are color coded to make them easier to identify. The printable layouts are organized so each sheet can be printed on the corresponding colored paper if you want to follow the same system.
You can also ignore the colors and work with a single paper type.
Once you get comfortable recognizing the shapes, try inventing your own creatures.

Paper Suggestions
Small scale
Around 65 lb cardstock (โ176 gsm)
Medium scale
Around 90โ110 lb cardstock (โ250โ300 gsm)
Thicker paper can make the connections tighter and sometimes more difficult to assemble.
Always score fold lines lightly before folding, and allow the modules to dry fully before assembling creatures.

Templates and Cutting File Formats
The set includes three file formats.
PDF
For manual cutting. Print at 1:1 scale.
DXF
For Silhouette machines, including the basic edition. Curves are converted into segments.
SVG
For Cricut and most other cutting machines.
All designs use metric units, with a base unit of 1 cm, so it is best to keep your cutting software set to metric.

fold-cut (cyan)
Segmented folding lines that can be blade cut. Useful when working with thicker cardboard.
fold-score (green)
Continuous folding lines for scoring wheels or stylus tools
draw (magenta)
Drawing lines for pen tools
Some cutting software may not preserve the layer colors or names, but the layer order should remain intact.
When importing files, make sure the scale remains consistent.
