Single Sheet Construction

This set of paper foldings includes 10 models, among the very first I designed. Each one is made from a single square sheet, used entirely, with only cuts and folds. The final form is held together with slits. The approach is partly inspired by Kirigami, a Japanese paper art related to origami, where cutting is allowed alongside folding. Needless to say, glue is not part of the equation.

The Origins

I started this series during the early days of the lockdown. At the time, my main practice was mostly concrete sculpture. Without access to my studio, I needed a way to keep working. So I set myself a challenge: recreate, in paper, a material that is pretty much the opposite of concrete, the same spirit as my sculptural practice.

From Concrete to Paper

At first glance, the two approaches couldn’t be more different. Concrete is heavy, cast, permanent, while paper is light, fragile, almost immaterial. But the process and the underlying philosophy share the same foundations.
The material is simple, humble, accessible, almost primitive. This is essential in my work, because I don’t want cost to become a barrier to experimentation and production.

Add, Subtract, Cut and Fold

The process itself is also very similar. I start with a square grid, usually ranging from 6x6 to 12x12 units. Working within these limits, and following a set of fairly strict rules, I search for forms and volumes.
With concrete, I use a boolean approach, probably inherited from years of 3D modeling, adding and subtracting volumes. With paper, it’s the opposite: by cutting and folding a flat 2D material, I create three-dimensional objects.
I like to say that these 3D forms made from a 2D sheet end up somewhere around 2.5D.

Process and Purity

In both cases, there is always the presence, or at least the suggestion, of interior and exterior spaces, along with architectural elements like doors, windows, arches, and stairs.
I’m working with the same obsessions: geometry, and a kind of material purity that comes from using a single, monochrome material. It allows shadows and light to do the work, without distraction.

And above all, there is the importance of the process itself, always operating within a clearly defined conceptual framework, no exceptions.
In architecture, there’s a saying that you know you’ve found the right design when the result feels simple, clear, and almost obvious.
